La Liga to launch free OTT service in August
Spain’s La Liga is set to build on the success of the YouTube channel it offers in conjunction with media group Mediapro by launching its own OTT streaming platform starting in August. The service will initially be delivered free of charge to viewers, said La Liga president Javier Tebas in an interview with local business daily Expansion, adding that the platform will focus on football while offering other sports such as hockey, swimming, golf, gymnastics and horse racing.
The on-demand content will include past La Liga games, interviews and documentaries as well as live games from Spain’s second-tier Liga 1|2|3 but won’t yet cover matches from the top-tier La Liga Santander. Bidding for rights to air live games from the country’s premier league for the next three seasons (2019-22) is set to begin in April, with new players such as Amazon preparing to enter the fray.
